User Experience
We wanted to rival Tony Hawk, but in a browser.
We created moments for competitive and cooperative gameplay, and leveraged the Facebook social graph to share exploits and find new content.
User Interface motion design.
Visual Style
Style and tone was super important and we wanted to feel right. We interviewed skaters, attended events, and even took to the local park in order to understand more about skate culture. We landed on a visual style that feels fresh, ties into a DIY aesthetic, and respects the relationship between skaters, art, and architecture as a playground for new experiences.
We made a AAA game inside Facebook.
The biggest challenge was centered around gameplay because users didn’t have a console controller and we expected everyone to use WASD or mouse. The trick here was to make a kick flip using a spacebar feel like it has the same type of excitement as the real thing. And, making the experience intuitive and simple to navigate was critical.
Showing off was absolutely encouraged.
We designed a standalone web community doing what Twitch and Youtube are doing today, but built inside a custom experience. Our web product used patterns established inside the game, but centered around finding and rating content, and discovering more about the community. Just like a hidden skate spot in the real world, we wanted to encourage our users to discover aspects of the game in little nuggets of fun.
